Less Than Half of College Students get a Job…

… after they finish college. Yes, you read that right. It’s the very sad part of our economy right now. There are too many college graduates and not enough jobs to place each and every one of them. According to Tony Pugh, of McClatchey Newspapers:

New monthly survey data from the Center for Labor Market Studies at Northeastern University in Boston finds that during the first four months of 2009, less than half of the nation’s 4 million college graduates age 25 and under were working in jobs that required a college degree. That’s down from 54 percent for same period last year.

Bummer news and, to be honest, it makes it seem like getting a degree is almost worthless now. Almost… But that’s not to say that you should immediately drop all your college classes and begin your life as a degree-less youth. Nobody is saying that and, if anybody did, they would be downright crazy. College grads still earn more money than non-college grads and they will still be qualified for many more jobs than somebody who doesn’t have one. It’s just that finding a job in your specific area of study will be much harder than it was for your parents/elders.

Now excuse me while I drown out my worries in ice cream and sitcoms.
