Paranormal Activity is a Must See for Horror Lovers

The cute couple who star in "Paranormal Activity"

I am always up for a good horror movie. The only problem is that the majority of horror movies out nowadays are more comic than they are scary. Whether it’s extremely bad acting or predictable plot lines, most horror films leave the viewer laughing rather than screaming.

Take for instance my “Bloody Valentine in 3-D.” If the 3-D glasses don’t make you feel ridiculous enough, the scene with the 3-D topless girl running is at the very least sure to make you smirk. So when a friend asked me to go see a new horror movie in theaters, called “Paranormal Activity,” I went in with the expectation that it would be like any other typical horror flick. I guess I should have done a little reseach before I made that assumption.

The super low budget film gave me goosebumps without the use of shocking excessive blood and guts. The film didn’t predictably kill off the first people to have sex, nor did it have corny scenes that make you, as a viewer, want to yell at the oblivious actors. “Paranormal Activity” freaked me out in a subtle way, a way that left my friend and I sitting with our eyes wide and our mouths hanging open when it cut to the credits.

(Minor Spoilers) “Paranormal Activity” follows a young couple (Micah and Katie) who videotape themselves in order to figure out who or what is tormenting them at night. It starts with small sounds, but as Micah starts to taunt whatever is in their house, things start to get worse and occurrences start to get weirder.

Whatever is haunting them starts moving things in their house, lighting things on fire, and tearing the couple farther and farther apart.

The movie is one-of-a-kind because of its ability to freak the viewer out, but also because it was made on such a low budget and has drawn an amazing response. Viewers had to vote for the movie to be shown in their area, and so many people voted so now the movie is being shown in theaters everywhere!

It’s definitely most appealing for college students and people in their 20’s, because of the starring actors young age. The actors are newly married and living on their own in their first house together. It’s relatable for college students living on their own, and moving into their first houses; even if it is with a roommate rather than a significant other. The female star is still taking classes part time, which is just one of the little details that makes this film more believable. The actors seem real and honest, which is only amplified by the “home-video” affect.

The only thing not working for this move is the risk of it being over-hyped. I went in without expectations, but for people who go in expecting it to be the greatest film created by all of mankind, the experience is sure to be slightly different.

Nevertheless, I strongly suggest if you like horror movies, you go and see it. I’m curious to know whether anyone else enjoys it as much as I did or if you think it was as lame as the “Blair Witch Project”.

A fan of blood, guts, and giggles? You may want to stick to classics like “Freddy vs. Jason” or “Chuckie,” but if you like freaky films about hauntings, like for example, the “The Ring,” then “Paranormal Activity” is a good choice.

Follow Micah and Katie as they dangerously attempt to learn about the supernatural. Will they live to see what is behind all of their tormenting? You’ll have to see for yourself!

I would have to muster up some courage to see it! But it sounds like a good movie for people who are fans of being scared :-P I’ll go see it on a night when I’m in the mood for a scary movie and let you know what I think!

    Nice review :)

I just saw this last week! Definitely better than 3D naked girls (I had no idea that happened in My Bloody Valentine…that’s hilarious) and definitely better than a lot of scary movies I’ve seen! Nicely done.
