College Graduates Recruited by the Military in China

November 3, 2009 | Todd G.

MilitaryThe global economic crisis has resulted in a number of strategies to help employ the unemployed. One of the hardest hit parts of society in these times are college graduates. Being thrust into the job market right now is like being dropped into a vat of ice water. Lots of graduates are taking low pay and moving outside of their careers just to get work. It’s a shock to the system that has many wondering what they just spent four years or more trying to achieve.

That’s what made this such an interesting story. According to the Associated Press, China has started a new campaign to recruit college graduates for the military. The government decided to increase the upper age limit for enlistment from 20 to 24. Unlike our military recruiters who seem to focus more on high schoolers looking to attend college (via the GI Bill), this would recruit graduates with bachelor’s degrees and give preference to college graduates over those with just a high school diploma. Those graduates who do a 2-year stint in the military have been told by the government they will get help finding a job once they are discharged.

Would you consider joining the military after graduation to help focus your skills? Or is this something you think should come before college?
