Major College Newspaper Site Disappears
November 9, 2009 | Todd G.
One of the first places I go to find out about news happening on college campuses is uwire.com. It’s an aggregator that connects people with college newspapers from across the country, but it is now, sadly, gone. It was always fun to read stories from small colleges I had never even heard of, as well as the latest from the big schools we’re all familiar with. You could see at a glance the kinds of topics, trends, and stories that were capturing the interest of aspiring journalists. The content was always unique and different and full of variety.
The other day I tried accessing it, only to have my web browser tell me that the server wasn’t responding. So I googled and found out why.
According to Wired Campus, Uwire has been suspended indefinitely (some have pointed to potential financial troubles as the culprit). I was shocked to hear the news and I’m hoping the company is able to deal with whatever it is they’re dealing with and get back to connecting us to the goings-on at our nation’s colleges. One wonders if they suffered from too small an audience, as college students would likely just go to their own school newspaper rather than read ones from other colleges. If anyone has more information about the site’s recent troubles, please let us know!
