First Year of College Paid by…Your High School?

University Preparatory High School goes above and beyond to help students succeed.
Here is an unusual story spotlighted by Rochelle Riley at the Detroit Free Press. Apparently, the University Preparatory High School in Detroit is taking their commitment to their students’ success further than any other high school I’ve heard or read about. The Charter school has decided to pay for the first year of college for all of its 124 students. Tuition, room, board, the whole works for students attending a Michigan public university. As for those going out of state, they can look forward to a $5,000 scholarship.
Talk about putting your money where your mouth is. I think this is a great story and an ideal illustration of how charter schools are really changing the face of education. As Rochelle points out, the students at this school are already making a positive difference in their community. Of course, the money isn’t given out without some requirements, which are laid out in the article and contain things like: maintaining a 3.0 GPA, completing a few specialized workshops, and not missing more than three homework assignments. Good stuff!

Now that’s a school that’s confident in its product…. And paying the whole first year ticket: one less year of student loans. Very cool.
