College? There’s an App for That

November 30, 2009 | Nathaniel

puggyirule Procrastination…Laziness…Outings with friends and lack of discipline…Lathargology…is that a word? In any case, these are the Achilles’ Heels to any studious college student or student in general. Luckily, there’s an app for that.

What’s an app? Well, “app” is short for Application. These are applied to your iPhone or any similar intelligent communication device or ridiculously small computer you may or may not carry on your person. Each is either some sort of game or object of momentary entertainment and others can be even more vital. Some are probably best referred to as tools seeing as there are actual levels to measure how even a surface is (from your phone!) and language translators complete with common, everyday phrases. Some even help you study.

You heard me right and here is a pretty comprehensive list of sites that are useful for any college scholar. Even those of you who lack discipline (probably aren’t reading this but then again I lack it too) can find something useful here.

Wow, I’m going through the list as I type this post. Albeit, not all of these are useful in studying. Seems like only the top portion of the list is devoted to the studious scholar. However, there are still plenty of practical applications too. Like, oh, need directions? Want to find the closest and CHEAPEST gas prices? What about the closest restroom around? Awe, man. Many is the time I’ve walked the city street in need of a porcelain fortune.

But let’s stop with the advertising for a minute. After all, I’m not receiving an iPhone for this article. How awesome would that be? I could blog from my iPhone since there are apps that will let you access your home computer from your iPhone (provided of course you’ve got phone service).

What creative mind could think up something so practical and awesome? So, practically awesome? The gray matter belongs to that of a college student like yourself (provided you yourself are a college student). Carnegie Mellon graduate student Jahanzeb Sherwani invented this app. That’s right: college students are making their own apps and money off of them.

Expensive though it is (25 bucks?), the price listed more than covers the use of a home computer away from home in my opinion. You wouldn’t have to pay for the internet or checking your email if that’s not covered by your phone plan because you’d just be using your computer at home…but NOT.

College students inventing apps isn’t rocket science or computer sciences all the time. Mostly, it’s just something creative and intriguing that stimulates your imagination. Momentary though it may be. How come you aren’t out there turning an iPhone into a whoopee cushion?

Them iPhone apps can be pretty vital for a college student and hey, if you can use ‘em to make a few bucks, why not?

Ah, the mobilization of the computer. The future is now. I can’t wait until apps are downloaded right into my eye.

Now, use those apps. Get creative. As always…

  1. Peterson’s out with an app that even chooses a college for you. You just plug in your criteria, and go from there. Crazy stuff.

And I have a college student making an app for me that assesses your learning style, personality and motivation style and gives suggestions and study tips. Coming out soon!
