Backpacks 101: The Popular Brands and Styles

December 2, 2009 | ama83

As a reprisal of last week’s take on backpacks, here are the brands that are most popular and the styles we love to show off. I already gave my take on what I think of book bags, but here is a little more specification for those who are interested in learning more:

Jansport – One of the most popular brands available, Jansport is usually very affordable because of its variety of bags offered. Typically, if I see someone wearing a backpack, the brand is almost always Jansport. It would seem that this brand has won the popularity contest at school.

Everest – This brand is one of the cheapest brands of backpacks, and they come in various styles of sporty, hiking, and school. It’s popular, but not the most popular. It’s like the counselor everyone knows, but few people are well-acquainted with.

LL Bean – Although they are slightly higher priced, their bags are described as durable, reliable, and versatile. This brand offers bags in many sizes and styles, including various pouches and even leather bags – no wonder it’s pricier.

Despite the popularity of brands, many students pay more attention to the style of a bag. Let’s take a closer look at style:

Single Straps and Sling Bags – The sling bags look more like a backpack with one strap while the single straps resemble a briefcase. The single strap bags seem to be the most popular. They always have the widest varieties of designs on the front flap. Whether it’s cartoons or favorite movies these bags let everyone know what your tastes are. They’re fun; they’re stylish; and, they’re easy to carry with just one throw over a single arm. Unfortunately, recent studies have shown that a heavy one-sided load is not good for your lungs or shoulders. So, as long as you aren’t carrying too many books, this is a fun bag to own.

Backpacks for Laptops – These bags are convenient for students who are in need of traveling everywhere with their laptops. They keep the laptops safe and provide a little extra room for additional books or notepads needed for class. Since this bag is meant to carry a heavier load, the shoulder straps are almost always fitted with extra cushion for the shoulders.

Backpacks with Wheels – These bags are a real back-saver for anyone who has to carry heavy loads around school. Since the weight of your books are conveniently rolling on the floor, instead of weighing you down on your back, students have little strain on their neck or shoulders.

Well, if you didn’t understand my obsession with backpacks before, maybe now you will. So, what’s your favorite book bag? If you have a different perception of a bag, extra information, or an important style or brand I missed, please share your own thoughts. I’d love to hear them.

I loved this, because my oldest daughter was so into backpacks when she was in high school. Every year she had to go hunting for the perfect one.

  2. Giovanni says:

People need to stop being lazy with these wheeled-back packs.

What happened to the way things were when people would just stuff their back packs and carry them on their backs? Isn’t that what a “back pack” is used for: your back?

This just frustrates me to no end!!!
