Facebook Privacy Settings Get an Update

A screen shot from my Facebook page's new settings.

As I logged onto my Facebook this morning, I was distracted from my notifications by a pop-window directing me to edit my privacy settings. As I logged on I noticed that there were a lot more options and a lot more privacy available to me via my Facebook–and let me tell you, I was quite impressed!

According to CNet, Facebook is still updating and will allow users to have more control over their Facebooks soon; however, I was granted the access today. Maybe they are doing it on a rolling scale, I don’t know,  but what I do know is that these setting will help you manage your privacy online.

I use Facebook for everything–to connect to UrbanSpoon, Digg, other social networking sites, and even to promote these stories, and so when people click on my icon, I want to make sure I censor what exactly they can see. You could also create groups to block (like mom, dad, brother, sister–aka People who should never see my Facebook), but now you can limit exactly what they see. For example there’s an updated block on your status, and the new preview version shows you what it would look like if someone was friending you and also how you come up in the search. These options were available before but now the revamped version is so much cleaner and easier to use.

You can even block people now if you feel the need. Just go to the tool bar and select settings, privacy settings and then you have a plethora of options for your viewing abilities and for who can view you.

These new settings will help you to put your best foot forward, avoid awkward conversations with your parents, and ensure that employers (both present and future) see only what you want them to see–basically, they see your best profile picture and not the one of you doing a keg stand at the frat house, but you don’t do that anyway, or at least don’t post it online…right?
