iPhone Applications for College Students
December 15, 2009 | VReitano
There are tons of posts on the Best iPhone applications for college students. I’ve read about 10 of them, and have my own reservations and my own favorites. This post should help you to sort through the rest and find the best.
Associated Content believes all students need are the Ajax Bartender application and the Belfry SciCalc application. Their article is good; however, those two applications do nothing to help me sort out my hectic schedule. For those worried about their finances, Studenomics, a site devoted to student finances, has several applications for handling your bank account and spending money. Their article lists several applications; however, the one I found fascinating was the My Budget Money Management application. This would definitely help me keep track of the money in my wallet – and believe me I’ve tried every money management application there is (well, at least all the free ones). This site, called my docking station, has some hints as well. Their article cites the Ajax Bartender again, as well as the Belfry SciCalc application – is it a rip off of Associated Content? I’m not sure, but these articles didn’t really help me – a seasoned iPhone user.
My top picks for iPhone applications have to do with everyday life – you eat, you exercise, spend money, do homework, and find things to help you procrastinate. If this is you, because it’s most certainly me, these applications should help you organize your iPhone and yourself.
Fitness Application
My favorite fitness application is actually free – it’s called LoseIt. It allows you to pick a diet plan, or more acturately a calorie counting plan, input your age, sex, weight, and desired weight. Then it asks how many pounds you want to lose per week and it develops a plan to help you do just that – it tells you how many calories to eat per day and when you will reach your goal. Now it can tell you that you have 1500 calories per day and you can blow them all on an Ice Cream sundae which is why this application is my favorite. It allows you to put in and search for anything you want to eat – I ate Hershey kisses the other day and still stayed in my daily limit. It’s all about counting what you eat and having a record.
For Social Networkers
If you can’t go five minutes without checking your online personalities, then these are the best applications for you:
1. Facebook: free. Do I really need to explain? It allows you do almost everything you can do on the Web. Farmville, however, cannot be played via the iPhone application.
2. LinkedIn: free again! Perfect for those seniors looking to stay on top of job hunts.
3. Tweetie 2: $2.99. I have Tweetie 1, and am currently downloading Tweetie 2. It integrates all the new features of Twitter and is an excellent application, totally worth the money.
4. Pandora: free. If you are a fan of Pandora while you work – the free internet radio, which can be customized to fit your preferences – then you must download this application. It’s not really social networking, but it definitely beats actually whistling while you work – put on the holiday station and enjoy!
For News Junkies, who are ultimately coffee junkies
If you’re anything like me, you sleep, eat and breathe news – it doesn’t have to be national news to get my attention, I read everything. NYTimes, Perez, Fashion blogs, fitness blogs, magazines – you name it, if it updates you on trends, I’m reading it.
My iPhone is with me all the time – I can’t even shut it off (yes, I’m addicted, but whatever, it won’t kill me!), so having my other guilty pleasures with me all the time helps!
1. AP Mobile – Free. This mobile application can be customized by location and also helps you to stay on top of the news – they send you little “text” messages (although, since they are free updates I don’t think AT&T counts them as text messages, but that’s how they appear on your screen), which bring you to the AP’s application and then the entire story.
2. Time Mobile – Free. For those of you who love Time magazine, a definite must have.
3. Starbucks Mobile Card – Free. SO AWESOME! You can register your card online and then add money to it via the application AND then use it in the store. Totally great for those I MUST HAVE STARBUCKS NOW moments.
These are just my favorites, there are hundreds, nay THOUSANDS more applications – I just bought the AP Stylebook on my iPhone, basically when the commercial says “there’s an app for that” they aren’t kidding!
