Has College Football Recruitment Gone too Far?

February 8, 2010 | Megan

imagesImagine being a middle-schooler. You’re only thirteen and not even sure which high-school you’re going to apply to, when all of a sudden the college of your dreams asks you to verbally commit to play football there. David Sills, a seventh grader from Bear, Delaware is the youngest person to verbally commit to a college. He can’t officially sign his letter of intent until 2015.

The football coach of USC approached Sills and offered him the football scholarship. David Sills looks like a promising player, but isn’t seventh grade a little young to be thinking about colleges? I understand his father doesn’t want to hold him back, but verbally committing this early seems risky. A lot can happen and change between middle school and college. I’m curious to hear your take on the early recruitment. Is it too soon or totally fine?
