How to Hide the Freshman Look

How to get rid of that freshman look.

The classic Freshman Look

There is nothing like being a freshman. In college, the name brands you and upperclassmen can spot you from miles away.  No matter how hard you may try to hide your true identity, and adopt that upperclassmen “swagger” it’s virtually impossible to do so. Trust me. I’ve tried. But eventually the fact that you have no idea where you’re going, and the fact that you couldn’t name all the academic buildings if you tried becomes apparent. As a first year student at Ithaca College in upstate New York, I am a typical freshman just trying to make it. Although it is impossible to completely hide your freshman identity, there are ways to hide the token freshman look.

1) Do not walk around with a campus map. No matter how lost you are, nothing is worth the extreme humiliation of being “that kid.” If you have a question about directions on campus, go to a teacher or some sort of administrative person and ask.

2) Do not stand in the middle of the hallway of any academic building. This will automatically brand you as a clueless freshman. Whether you go to large university like Penn State, or a smaller one like Ithaca College, walk with a purpose in the hallways.

3) Watch your volume. In most cases, there is no reason to scream at your friends from across the quad or across the dining hall. Only freshman feel the need to yell, and basically act obnoxious. Be considerate of those around you, and don’t be that kid in the library…on their cell phone.

Remember: visually, no one can tell what grade you’re in or how old you are. At first glance, anyone that passes you on campus will know that you’re a college student first and foremost. If you have confidence in yourself, the freshman look can become your swagger.
