Flip-Flops: Love Em’ or Hate Em’?

March 12, 2010 | ama83

Whether it is summer or winter, I see all sorts of students flashing their toes, followed by the slip slap sounds of the ever-favorite flip-flop sandal. They’re like the socially acceptable slipper. People slip them on because it’s quick, and (I suppose) comfortable to wear. And, because of their popularity, there are numerous colors and styles for everyone to choose from.

Personally, I hate them. I’ve tried wearing them, but I cannot stand the slapping sound they make with every step I take; I don’t like the feeling of something stuck between my toes; and, I loathe the way they slip off my feet so easily while I’m walking. My dislike for these sandals is so strong that I am practically begging someone to please tell me, what on earth is so appealing about these shoes?

Obviously, my own opinion of flip flops does not affect everyone else’s style. Every class full of students has at least one student who is wearing flip flops. I can remember walking on campus on rainy days and still seeing people sport their flips flops as they try running from one class to another. This inevitably gave me instances where I witnessed people slipping in the rain, or losing a sandal because their flip flops were just not cooperating with the simple act of walking.

So, why do people wear flip flops in the rain? Your toes have to get cold from the rain drops… don’t they? There are those who try wearing socks with their sandals, but this ends up looking so much worse than the regular look of the flip flop.

In my ongoing hatred for these sandals, I can’t help finding more and more complaints to make about these shoes, including the ways the shoe itself mistreats your feet.

Health wise, flip flops are actually bad for your feet. No, I am not making this up. I have known people who ruin the arches of their feet because the flip flops they always wear provide no arch support. Sadly, this makes me question the heel support of the flat Mary Jane shoes I love so much.

I also find that flip flops are not complimentary to your feet. Although I do not exactly promote the use of high heels, I find the flat-footed look of the flip flops to be very unappealing. For the most part, I also find that when people wear flip flops, their feet usually end up dirty and with dry heels. I don’t know why this is common; it’s just the general look that seems to go with flips flops.

Alright, so maybe I am being a little harsh on this old sandal. Hopefully someone out there has some insight as to the appeals of the flip flop. Enlighten me with your love of the flip flop. Tell me why it is so darn popular… please?

I’m a native Californian, and flip flops are awesomeness. For the most part. I can think of a few instances of unsightly hobbit-feet and some yellowing toe-nails that seemed to be reaching out from the thong, but on the whole, I like flip-flops.

Feet need to breath. They need to feel air and wiggle in the sunglight. Flip-flops are a symbol of freedom, of tootsies unfettered by convention or consumerism. Support Flip-flops!

Now, CROCS on the other hand are the devil. :X

okay lil’ sis…hate to be harsh, but you are sooo off on this one!…i freakin’ live in flip flops in summer! I love them for several reasons: 1) they keep your feet cool…covered feet means a warmer body..not good in summer 2) easy to put on and take off…a must in summer when walking to the pool, heading to the beach, or just a quick trip to the store 3)They’re inexpensive!…i’ve bought pairs for a dollar a piece! which means i can have footwear in every color under the sun to match every item of clothing i own, without breaking the bank 4)i love my feet..especially when they’re manicured…and what better way to show them off without being barefoot
Yes i have seen nasty, crusty, feet in flip flops ..but I’ve also seen them in strapped sandals too! And strapped sandals can cut into the back of your heels…i don’t like wearing band-aids in order to wear shoes thank you…no worries there with the amazing flip flops!…did i shed any light? :)

Personally, I don’t really like flip flops, and, yes, they are not the best thing for your feet. And they can be dangerous too. Truth be told, I wear them on occasion (and even in winter, like Olga D. Thomas said, “Easy to put on and take off.”

Overall, they should be kept for the beach or the park, or for wearing around the house and yard.

This was a great topic for discussion, by the way!

I have a pair of flops I got from CVS that are super cushioned and even support my arches (very important for an avid runner like myself!). But those little dinky and dainty sandals are definitely not good for your feet.

However, I think most of what we wear these days is fashion over function, so in that sense, flops are right on par with the rest what clothes we put on.

I even see some guys at work wearing these things.
Of course they do look like they are homeless.

You know what flip-flops say about you? That either you’re too lazy or stupid to put on REAL shoes. Flip flops make everyone look tacky, ignorant and unclean.

Flip-flops can make the best looking person look very bad. It’s an all around bad look and choice.

Flip-flops are should only be worn in two places, the beach and a public shower. If you’re not at either one of those places, put on real shoes.

And lastly, I don’t care how “good” you think you’re feet look, how often you get a pedicure, NOBODY has good looking feet.

    I’m with you, Isaiah.

I hate flip-flops. I know some people love them, but not me.

They look ridiculous. They aren’t classy. They’re unprofessional.

And sorry to say this, but it does seem to be about laziness. How difficult is it to slip on some cute ballet flats or sandals that at least look nice?

Being “casual” doesn’t mean being “sloppy”.

Very few people who wear them have clean, attractive feet.

I see people on a daily basis with crusty heels and they look like they don’t bathe often. They slap around in flip-flops and sometimes you can TELL that they have poor hygiene.

There’s this girl in my class at university with these big, nasty feet who constantly wears flip-flops. Her overall appearance is pretty sloppy and the flip-flops don’t help matters. There’s this guy with long, greasy hair who wears flip-flops. His feet always look dirty.

I’m sorry if I sound rude and judgmental…I’m really nice, I promise. :)

But flip-flops are simply not cool in my book.
