The Top 5 Student Discounts You Didn’t Know About
March 25, 2010 | MeganWe already take advantage of the mini-discount our student ID gives us when we go to the movies, but there are some other overlooked hot-spots where your student ID could help save a pretty penny.
1. The Aquarium or Zoo
You may not have gone since you were little, but seeing the animals again is a way to relive your childhood. Now that it’s spring, you can enjoy the nice weather, and maybe even have a romantic creative date. Many zoos and aquariums near universities give student discounts, the same way movies do to senior citizens and young people.
2. Bring your sexy back.
Manicures and pedicures can be pricey, but with your student ID you can get a great discount. The salons around my University deduct at least 5 dollars on regular manicures. If there isn’t a sign that says: Discount with ID, it is definitely worth it to ask. If the people working at the salon look confused, you can mention their competition. Other nail and hair salons are giving discounts, and if they want to keep their customers happy they will give them too.
This also holds true for tanning salons, but that’s one discount my fair skin will be more than happy not to indulge in.
3. Skating
On campus, ice-skating is free! All you need to do is flash your ID and you have free access to the ice-rink. If you don’t have your own skates, rentals are only $2, making a cheap date or fun evening with a group of friends. Skating is a sure way to mix things up, do something out of the ordinary, and avoid the usual pre-game. Skating usually occurs at night on the weekends, but there are also afternoon sessions at my University. If you’re not into the drinking scene, skating is also a great alcohol alternative. It allows you to get out there and still be social, while even getting a little exercise.
4. Bowling
Late night bowling, often referred to as “cosmic bowling,” is another great way to use your student ID, score discounts, and avoid pressures to drink. Normally bowlers are forced to pay at least $20 when it comes down to renting out the lanes, shoes, and getting refreshments. With your student ID you will be paying less than half of the normal rate. Unlike normal bowling, late-night means disco balls, black lights, and loud popular music to dance to! It’s a sure way to have a good time, and if your friends roll their eyes or make a comment like: “Lame.” You know they’re probably just afraid of losing…(sound like any guy you know?)
5. Ping-pong, Air hockey, or Pool tournament
While most people are trying their luck at getting ping pong balls into half filled Solo cups, why not try participating in a tournament that requires the same kind of table? Clubs on campus often hold different competitive tournaments that include a variety of games. Ping pong is one that people can get into, and you don’t have to be a super ripped dude to be good at it. A little hand eye coordination and wrist skill is all you need to be champion. If you’re really lucky, your student center may have an air hocky or pool table. All you need to do is show your student ID, and using the table is yours free. If you want to up the stakes of the tourney, however, you could always participate with a club that makes a pot where everyone chips in five dollars and the winner takes all. Either way, with winnings or without, it can be great way to meet new people and get out there without getting out your wallet.
