Laptops: Classroom Friend or Foe?

Laptops – they are a quick means to take notes, look up information, and even play a game of solitaire or IM with buddies in the middle of a teacher’s lecture. Let’s face it, when students pop open their laptops in class, very few, if any, actually use their personal computers for homework’s sake. So, why are laptops allowed in the classroom then?

Women’s Day: Don’t Let it Be a “Do-Nothing” Day

I need another “Day” like I need another hole in the head, or another “Awareness Month” for that matter. Monday, March 8th, was the 100th anniversary of “Women’s Day,” which made me wonder what is going on with all of these Days? Is there a “Men’s Day,” or is that just called the Super Bowl? What’s In an Age? The Difference Between 20 and 21

When I turned 20, I looked in the mirror and started crying. I was sure I saw wrinkles.

Just kidding, but honestly I was sad that I could no longer consider myself a “teenager.” I started to feel a little guilty for still sleeping with a teddy bear, relying on my parents financially, and forgetting to make my bed.

I also started to think about what all the other 20-year olds out there have already accomplished in their lives. Aside from celebrities like Daniel Radcliffe, who have already made millions of dollars before turning the legal 1-8, what is expected of normal 20 year olds nowadays?

Want to Rock Out? See “Cop Out” (Not “Alice in Wonderland”)

I’d been saving my movie-going money for Alice in Wonderland until I read this review in Entertainment Weekly – so today, I’m writing a review of Cop Out. Sorry Alice, but when the last line of a review is, “By the end you’re asking, Where’s the wonder?” I’m pretty disinclined to check out your off-kilter world. Thankfully, Cop Out didn’t disappoint, and the boyfriend and I agreed we were glad we’d opted to see it.

Many Hands, Many Voices, One World: Celebrating Language

I knew it would be a good week when our German teacher began talking about making T-shirts in class. “Last year they did a banner,” she said with a smile.   To be clear, Frau ( a well loved nickname) isn’t the type of teacher to hand out free days or organize craft learning activities.  The [...]

Construction of a Protest – Why UC Students are Striking Today

You may have heard a few brief reasons why the universities have raised tuition and are planning another 34% increase this fall. But if you’re like me, the whole business of budget cuts and tuition increases is confusing. And the reasons behind the student protests happening today at UC campuses are even more confusing – because it isn’t just that students are angry at having to pay more money. There is a lot more to it than that. Let me break it down for you as it was broken down for me.

Free Tilly: Should Wild Animals Be Kept in Captivity?

Tilikum, the whale that recently drowned his trainer, has been in captivity for 30 years. He is the oldest and biggest bull orca in captivity and now many groups are trying to free him because they believe his murderous actions to be a cry for help. What do you think?

Do Your Research (Really!): Tips to a Splendid Spring Break

You know that saying, “It was like I was in another country?” Well, it’s darn tootin’ true. College friends, spring break is rapidly approaching and if I’ve learned anything since I took a quick trip across the border to Tijuana, Mexico this weekend, all I can say is: do your reasearch.
